Sasha Graham’s Tarot Diva Blog – The Wheel of Fortune Spins Like a Hurricane and Contest Winner

Reading Joseph Campbell, I stumbled upon an incredible meaning for The Wheel of Fortune card. Campbell was speaking of the symbol, not the tarot card in particular.

“If you are attached to the rim of The Wheel of Fortune, you will either be above, going down or at the bottom coming up. But if you are at the hub, you are in the same place all the time, centered.”

Joseph Campbell, The Power of Myth

I j’adore this interpretation! The Wheel of Fortune card seems to trump The World card when we look at it this way. Although we might look at The Wheel as the active balancing act, the dance or work of being centered, while The World card is achieving that balance without even thinking about it. The big question is of course . . . how do you stay centered?

The eye of a hurricane offers us the same idea of calmness and serenity amidst the wild winds of uncertainty and change. Speaking of which, I received amazing entries for last week’s Gothic Hurricane Writing contest! Thank you awesome writers!!!!

I’d like to share a beautiful song submitted by David Totty. The lyrics, inspired by a hurricane, remind us that love is often the force that keeps us safe and centered. Thanks David!

“EYE OF THE STORM” by David Totty

Outside, the sky’s a blackish green
The wind’s a-howlin’ somethin’ mean
But inside, you are here with me
Unfazed by the calamity

The storm is knocking down our door
As we lie silent on the floor
Our souls connecting more and more
Deaf to Mother Nature’s war

Because you and me are the eye of the storm
A calming peace
Still and warm
Something new is being born
When I’m with you
My fear is torn apart

Outside, destruction wails and moans
We turn out the lights like we’re not home
Then you whisper in the sweetest tone
“No one’s out there. We’re alone.”

And if we make it through alive
Tomorrow when we go outside
We’ll look at how the Earth was fried
And I’ll kiss you on the cheek and sigh

Because we were safe in the eye of the storm
A perfect peace
Our souls conform
To this new paradise that’s been born
From destruction
We’ll never mourn again.

  1. Reversed Cards
Because Tarot cards each have one picture that faces in one direction, it is possible that cards will be facing the opposite direction when dealt. According to most sources, this doesn’t change the meaning of the card, but simply weakens the impact of the meaning. is that right?
